India E-Commerce Market 2025 — The Opportunity
India's e-commerce market is expected to reach $200 billion by 2027, making it the third largest in the world after the US and China. With over 900 million internet users and rapidly growing mobile payment adoption, the timing for launching an online business in India has never been better.
Even more importantly for small and medium businesses: the rise of direct-to-consumer (D2C) selling allows you to bypass large marketplaces like Amazon and Flipkart and build your own brand with higher margins. Indian D2C brands like Mamaearth, boAt, and Lenskart have shown that homegrown brands can compete at scale when they own their digital channels.
Step 1: Choosing What to Sell
The most important decision in e-commerce is product selection. The best e-commerce products share several characteristics:
- High demand, low local competition: Search Google Keyword Planner for your product category. Look for 1,000+ monthly searches with fewer than 10 strong competitors on page 1.
- Good margins: A minimum of 30–40% gross margin is needed to cover marketing, logistics, and platform costs. Products below ₹200 are very hard to make profitable unless selling in high volume.
- Shippable without damage: Fragile, heavy, or perishable products create logistics nightmares. Start with products that ship easily in a standard courier box.
- Something you know: Selling in a category you understand gives you an enormous advantage in writing product descriptions, answering customer questions, and spotting trends.
WooCommerce (WordPress) — Best for: Small to medium stores
The most widely used e-commerce platform in India. Built on WordPress, it is flexible, affordable, and can be managed without technical knowledge after initial setup. Development cost: ₹30,000 – ₹80,000.
Custom React + Node.js Store — Best for: Scale and performance
For businesses expecting high traffic, complex product configurations, or custom features (subscription boxes, auction models, B2B pricing), a custom build offers maximum control and performance. Development cost: ₹80,000 – ₹2,50,000+.
Shopify — Best for: Getting started very fast
Monthly SaaS fee (₹1,500 – ₹8,000/month), but no upfront development cost. Shopify is easiest to set up but locks you into their ecosystem and charges a transaction fee on every sale unless you use Shopify Payments (not available in India — you must use a third-party gateway with an additional fee).
Step 3: Setting Up Payment Gateways in India
Payment gateway integration is essential for any Indian e-commerce site. Your customers expect to pay via UPI, cards, net banking, EMI, and wallets. Here are the main options:
Razorpay
The most popular payment gateway for Indian startups and e-commerce businesses. Easy integration, good documentation, supports all major payment methods. Transaction fee: 2% on most transactions. No setup fee.
PayU
Strong alternative with competitive rates for higher volumes. Good for businesses processing ₹10 lakh+ per month. Negotiable transaction fees.
Cashfree
Very fast settlement times (as fast as T+1 instant settlement). Good for businesses where cash flow matters. Competitive on pricing for UPI transactions specifically.
For most new e-commerce businesses in India, Razorpay is the right starting choice. Set it up first, and switch gateway if volume justifies better rates later.
Step 4: GST & Legal Requirements for Indian E-Commerce
If your annual turnover exceeds ₹40 lakh (₹20 lakh for service businesses), GST registration is mandatory. If you sell on marketplaces like Amazon, it is mandatory regardless of turnover. Key points:
- Register on the GST portal and get your GSTIN number before your first sale
- Add your GSTIN to all invoices, your website footer, and payment receipts
- File monthly GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B returns (or quarterly if turnover is under ₹1.5 crore with the Quarterly Return Monthly Payment scheme)
- Maintain a business current account — never use personal accounts for business transactions
- For products attracting different GST rates, configure your payment gateway and billing system to apply the correct rate
Step 5: Logistics & Delivery Solutions
Getting products to customers reliably and affordably is one of the biggest challenges in Indian e-commerce. Your options:
- Shiprocket: Aggregates multiple courier partners (Delhivery, BlueDart, DTDC, etc.) and automatically selects the cheapest and fastest option per pin code. Best for small to medium volumes.
- Delhivery: Direct contract, better rates for 500+ shipments/month, excellent coverage in smaller towns and tier-2 cities like Hosur.
- Amazon Easy Ship / Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA): If selling on Amazon marketplace, their logistics network is hard to beat for reliability.
- Local logistics: For Hosur and the Bengaluru region specifically, same-day or next-day delivery through local courier partners can be a strong differentiating factor.
Step 6: Marketing Your Online Store
Building a beautiful online store means nothing if no one visits it. Here is the minimum marketing strategy for a new Indian e-commerce business:
- Google Shopping Ads: Show your products directly in Google image search results. Extremely effective for product-based businesses.
- Instagram product reels: Lifestyle content showing your products in use. Even a simple phone camera works if the content is authentic.
- WhatsApp broadcast: Build a WhatsApp list of customers from day one. Every order should result in the customer being added to your broadcast list (with consent).
- SEO product descriptions: Write unique, keyword-rich product descriptions — do not copy from suppliers. This is the single most overlooked SEO tactic in e-commerce.
- Retargeting ads: Show ads to people who visited your site but did not buy. Cart abandonment recovery alone can increase revenue by 10–15%.
